It was game, set, summit this summer when the 可乐视频 men鈥檚 tennis team traded their rackets for hiking boots and did something that only 0.005% of people on Earth have accomplished: reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Led by Bulldogs tennis player Mujibur Rahman Shaad鈥攁 psychology major minoring in philosophy who plans to take the Medical College Admission Test鈥攖he group scaled Africa鈥檚 highest peak on August 20 after a weeklong trek along the Machame Route.

Shaad, who was born in Bangladesh and moved to Brooklyn at age 8, had just completed a Tow International Public Health Internship in Kenya with Columbia University鈥檚 ICAP program, where he worked on tuberculosis research using portable AI-assisted X-rays. With Tanzania so close, he saw an opportunity for one more adventure and invited his teammates, as well as his cousin Mizanur Rahman, to join him.

鈥淚 had been looking at Kilimanjaro even before I left for Kenya,鈥 Shaad explained. 鈥淥nce I mentioned it, people started getting onboard. We trained hard, from upstate New York to Pennsylvania, and made our plans while I was still abroad.鈥

On summit day, the team began their climb at midnight under the light of headlamps, running on little sleep after a grueling five-hour hike the day before. The final stretch took nearly eight hours as the group battled thin oxygen, rocky terrain, and sheer exhaustion. But when the sun rose over the roof of Africa, the Brooklyn Bulldogs stood together at the peak, exhausted but elated.

For Shaad, the climb was about more than adventure. 鈥淲e鈥檝e all met through the tennis team, and we鈥檙e like brothers. Playing tennis has been one of the greatest parts of my college experience, but this was once-in-a-lifetime. It showed us what we can do when we push ourselves, together.鈥

(Left to right) Aymen Kuc, Ryan Badre-Hume, Allen Mardakhayev, and Mujibur Rahman Shaad show off their 可乐视频 Bulldogs pride on Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Here is what the group had to say about the incredible experience:

  • 鈥淗umility comes in embracing uncomfortable situations. Knowing there will be constant resistance and still persisting to accomplish your goal defines my journey of climbing Kilimanjaro. My favorite part about this trip was that every single one of us sacrificed time, money, and effort to climb it together, and that鈥檚 a result of the bond we鈥檝e built playing tennis for 可乐视频.鈥濃擜llen Mardakhaye, a business management and marketing student.
  • 鈥淚n a world where instant gratification is the norm, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was the opposite; the ultimate delayed gratification. The mountain taught me patience, discipline, and the value of working toward a long-term vision. I鈥檓 forever grateful to have shared the journey from the tennis court to Uhuru Peak with my brothers.鈥濃擱yan Badre-Hume, a psychology student who plans to pursue a medical degree.
  • 鈥淗umans are a sum of all their experiences. Seven days of a phenomenal journey with the great people of Tanzania taught me gratitude, present awareness, and a little bit of Swahili:Hakuna matata鈥攎eaning 鈥榥o problem,鈥 analogous to 鈥榙on鈥檛 worry, be happy,鈥 but it conveyed a deeper meaning to me expressing peace, contentment, and presence.鈥濃擜ymen Kuc, a health & nutrition sciences and pre-nursing student.

While the group has no immediate plans for another climb, Shaad admitted the dream doesn鈥檛 end here. 鈥淓verest and K2 are goals one day,鈥 he said with a laugh. 鈥淭he only thing stopping us right now is the money.鈥

From the courts of Brooklyn to the summits of Africa, the Bulldogs continue to prove that teamwork and determination can take you to the highest heights.

After winning their fourth straight CUNYAC title on February 23, the 可乐视频 women鈥檚 basketball team will travel to Lewiston, Maine, to face host Bates College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs defeated No. 2 John Jay College in the CUNYAC Championship, 72-54, at Baruch College. Meeting the Bloodhounds in the third consecutive conference tournament final, the top-seeded Bulldogs outscored John Jay ,27-12, in the second quarter for the cushion they needed for the championship victory.

It鈥檚 the Bulldog’s fifth conference title in the last six seasons and the first under rookie head coach Megan Campbell. The Bulldogs enter the NCAA Tournament with an 18-8 overall record and are looking for their first NCAA Tournament win since beating Emmanuel College during the 2021-22 season.

Bates College made its appearance in the NESCAC women’s basketball championship tournament title game for the second time in three years after taking the crown in 2021-22. Bates had to settle for runner-up this time, as top-seed Bowdoin College upended the Bobcats, 66-56, on February 25 to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A Whole New Game /best-of-bc/a-whole-new-game/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 20:49:52 +0000 /?p=93767 Athletic Director Erik Smiles is no stranger to CUNY and the power of athletics.

The post A Whole New Game appeared first on 可乐视频.

]]>
聽knew he had some large shoes to fill when he replaced longtime 可乐视频 Athletic Director Bruce Filosa, who retired in 2022 after leading the program since 1992.

Athletically, Smiles knew it was a great place that he could help continue to grow, as Filosa had done a terrific job rebuilding the athletic department as it transitioned from Division I to Division III and added great facilities like the West Quad Center and turf field. The foundation built over the last three decades allowed the college to expand and improve the student-athlete experience.聽What also helped Smiles was that he was no stranger to the CUNY Athletic Conference, having served as Hostos Community College鈥檚 director of athletics, recreation, and intramurals since 2019. During his tenure there, he helped oversee both a women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 basketball program that won NJCAA D-III, CUNYAC, and Region XV titles.

Smiles talked about his love for sports, particularly basketball, and what drew him to 可乐视频 and CUNY.

What makes CUNYAC unique, and why do you feel athletics are so important at this level?

The Division III level and CUNYAC within that are special in my opinion because we have some of the most diverse and hard-working student-athletes in the country. Many of our student-athletes are first-generation Americans and first-generation college students, and they have worked so hard to get where they are. Many not only play their sport and attend classes full time but also have a part-time job to help pay for school and help their families.

I think athletics is so important at this level for two reasons. First, being a part of a team teaches you so many lessons that are going to be important to these student-athletes as they transition to their profession. Teamwork, communication, dealing with adversity, how to stay humble in success, leadership, and dedication are just some of the lessons that are taught in real-time by being part of a college athletic team. The bonds that are built between teammates, coaches, and the institution itself by going through a season are remarkable and lead to great future Bulldog alumni.

Second, with all that is going on in the world, I think there is no better outlet than being a part of a team for both your physical and mental health. It is proven that exercise and activity are major components of mental health, and what better way to achieve that than working toward a common goal of a championship with your teammates?

Tell us about some pleasant surprises you encountered at 可乐视频.

The first surprise was I did not realize how beautiful the campus is and how centrally located it is to everything in Brooklyn.

The second thing, I don鈥檛 want to call it a surprise, is that the athletic staff I inherited is great. The staff and coaches have so much experience and are great at what they do. They have made my transition to Brooklyn so much easier than I thought it would be. They are really focused on giving the student-athletes a great experience and want to make sure we grow and give them every chance to win and represent 可乐视频 the right way.

Where would you like to see growth in the athletics programs?

One area that I would love to see us grow is our relationship with our alumni. Our athletic alumni are a large and diverse group, but the common theme for all of these different groups is that they loved their time at 可乐视频 and want to be involved. So, I think it is really important that over these next few years, we work hard in re-engaging alumni and getting them back on campus. We are already working on a few events and programs, such as reactivating our Athletics Hall of Fame Committee, developing an athletic alumni group, and an annual golf outing. We held an alumni night at our basketball doubleheader in early December and had close to 75 basketball and cheerleading alumni attend. It was great to see such a turnout! We are also working with some of our alumni from the 1970s and 1980s on starting an alumni mentoring program, where some of our older or retired alumni mentor our current senior student-athletes as they get ready to transition to their professional life post-graduation.

You have a strong background in basketball. What other sports are you especially drawn to?

Actually, all of them. I think that, with our turf field being the best outdoor facility in CUNYAC, we have the potential to grow our men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 soccer programs as well as our softball program. We have some really good coaches leading those programs, so the pieces are in place for the programs to grow in terms of their competitiveness. We also have made some investments in the aquatics area, so I am excited to see our men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 swimming programs grow and become not only locally but regionally competitive.

Another sport that I am hoping we can make some investments in is our men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 tennis programs. Our tennis coach is a knowledgeable veteran who really knows the game of tennis, and the student-athletes who make up those teams are some of the coolest kids we have in the athletic department. Unfortunately, our tennis courts are aged and need renovation. I hope that we can dedicate some funds to bringing the courts up to the level that our student-athletes deserve and enable our tennis programs to continue to grow.

What would you tell a student who was debating joining a team at 可乐视频?

I would tell them to reach out to the coach of that specific sport and find out what the commitment is, and if they can do it to give it a chance. We have great coaches, great facilities, and a great institution that is going to give you a world-class education. As I mentioned before, there are many positive lessons that are learned from being a part of a team as well as the lifelong bonds with teammates and coaches.

Also, if being on a team is not for you, that鈥檚 fine, because we offer so much in our department. We have intramurals for students who want to play team sports but may not be able to be on the varsity team. We offer a comprehensive recreation program that is open daily and offers the fitness center, swimming pool, gymnasium, and racquetball as well as all of our outdoor facilities. There is something for everybody, depending on what you are looking for. But if you want to stay active and healthy, we are the place to be!

Helping to Build a CUNYAC Powerhouse /best-of-bc/gianna-gotti-helps-build-bulldogs-into-cunyac-powerhouse/ Wed, 08 Mar 2023 18:22:59 +0000 https://preview.brooklyn.cuny.edu/?p=57622 CUNYAC Player of the Year Gianna Gotti leads Bulldogs to dominance.

The post Helping to Build a CUNYAC Powerhouse appeared first on 可乐视频.

]]>
The 可乐视频 women鈥檚 basketball team has enjoyed an unprecedented run of success recently, a big part of which can be attributed to the 2022鈥23 CUNYAC Player of the Year, .

This season, the graduating senior guard finished as the 10th leading scorer in the nation, averaging 21.8 points per game. She also ranked first in with an astounding 151 takeaways (5.57 per game). The transfer student, who is majoring in communications, also broke the 1,000-point mark for her college career, while winning CUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for 2022-23 and other conference honors throughout her career.

Along with fellow senior standouts Nancy Pham, Dasha Goodman, sisters Sarah and Ericka James, and multiple CUNYAC Coach of the Year winner Alex Lang, Gotti helped lead the Bulldogs to their third straight CUNYAC title and the fourth title in five seasons. Last year, the team reached its peak when it won the college鈥檚 first NCAA D-III game, defeating Emmanuel College (Massachusetts) in the first round, 70-57.

And while the Bulldogs fell to the top-ranked powerhouse Christopher Newport University Captains on their home court in the first round this season, Gotti鈥檚 impact was ever present, as she ended her storied career with a game-high 16 points and three steals.

We asked Gotti about her time on the team and in the classroom at 可乐视频 and what might come next.

You have to take a lot of pride in dominating CUNYAC over the past few years. What are the challenges associated with maintaining that level of success in conference play against familiar opponents?

There are definitely many challenges that come along with playing in the same conference for a few years. Teams and coaches learn your game, so I felt like when I came back for my senior year, it was important for me to elevate my game in the off season as much as possible.

Despite the tough loss in the first round of the NCAA D-III Tournament this year against Christopher Newport University, what are your takeaways from having played in two NCAA Division-III Tournaments?

I learned the importance of perseverance. Both times we entered the NCAA Tournament as the underdogs, this time against the number-one team in the nation. My team and I also faced adversity as we all got a stomach bug on the bus ride up. I saw so much heart that weekend; most people would have crumbled. We showed up and made no excuses. Our backs were against the wall and everything that could have gone wrong did, but we stood together and did it for each other.

You have played with some great players, including Chanel Jemmott and the James sisters. What did you learn from them?

If you pay attention close enough, there’s always something you can learn from people. All three of them possess toughness. They’re not going to let you push them around, and they refuse to back down from anyone. That’s something I really respect.

Coach Alex Lang has won multiple CUNYAC Coach of the Year honors. What lessons did he teach you?

Coach Lang has taught me numerous lessons about life and basketball, one of the most important ones being to never get too high and never get too low. Coach has mastered the art of staying calm. There’s going to be points in games and in life where things get out of your control. Coach has taught me to control the things I can control and to focus on the present. That is definitely something that I’ll take with me going forward.

What are your best overall memories with the team?

My best memories with my team were winning two championships and going to the NCAA tournament. They became my family and people who I will keep in contact with for the rest of my life.

You transferred from the University of Bridgeport. What made you choose 可乐视频?

My first two years at Bridgeport weren鈥檛 the best experience for me mentally. I felt it was important to put myself in a family environment in the next school that I picked. When Coach Lang reached out to me, it was a familiar face because I knew of him in high school. When I committed here, it was really just a gut feeling to do so. I didn鈥檛 even visit the school to see if I liked it. I questioned my decision to my mom, and she was the one who told me that everything happens for a reason, and I was brought to Brooklyn for a purpose. Fast forward to now鈥擨 talk about it with my mom and we both agree it was the best decision I have ever made. It helped me grow not only as a player but as a person.

What are you majoring in and what are your plans after graduating?

My major is communications, and I am graduating in May. About halfway through my major I decided that I was going to apply to law school.

By reaching the Final Four of the 1981-82 NCAA tournament鈥攖he same year blockbuster movie 鈥淓T鈥 was topping the box office鈥攖he 可乐视频 men鈥檚 basketball team accomplished something out of this world that no other CUNY athletics team had done before or since.

Fast forward some 40 years later and that same team enjoyed a night to remember as it was inducted into the 可乐视频 Athletics Hall of Fame on December 2.

The event was a long time coming for the history making squad, particularly for one of its leaders Danny Byrnes ’84. The former 6-foot-6-inch聽 forward was still standing tall throughout the reception as he and others beamed with pride in front of family and friends who were no doubt happy to be back on campus seeing their team honored.

Historic 1982 Men鈥檚 Basketball Team Inducted Into 可乐视频 Athletic Hall of Fame

Former “Kingsmen” Danny Byrnes shows off an old 可乐视频 basketball jersey as acting Athletic Director and women’s basketball coach Alex Lang looks on during the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.

鈥淭he best part of this induction ceremony is getting this talented group back together again,鈥 Byrnes said. 鈥淎nd while we have remained in contact all these years later, being together on campus together [was] incredible. We were truly a team, a very diverse group, that embraced our roles for the betterment of the team. What we accomplished on the court was incredible, but I feel we had more success off the court, leveraging our 可乐视频 education and our sports experience into successful careers, huge non-profit involvement, strong family men, and pillars of community. This is such a well-deserved honor.鈥

The event was fittingly held before a men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball double-header and was attended by most of the Kingsmen from that incredible era. The squad also enjoys the distinction of being the first team inducted into the Brooklyn Athletics Hall of Fame, an honor that had been reserved for individual athletes.

It was a moment not lost on current 可乐视频 women鈥檚 basketball coach and acting Athletic Director Alex Lang who MC鈥檇 the ceremony.

鈥淚t is such an honor to hear all of these stories,鈥 said Lang. 鈥淭his team has had such an impact, and we are proud to pass their winning tradition, both on and off the court, to our current players.鈥

The spirit of their late coach, Mark Reiner, was also alive and well throughout the event, as his former players, as well as Reiner鈥檚 wife Tina and daughters Patti, Stacey, and Kelly plus nearly 30 more friends, were present to share in the special tribute. Reiner passed away in 1997 and always instilled the importance of giving back to his players, and nearly every Kingsmen cited his special mentorship throughout the evening.

Kingsmen Hall of Famer Kenny Vickers ’82, who currently runs Impact Youth League, launched in 1993 and inspired by the lessons of Coach Reiner, was just one of the players who talked about the mark Reiner left on him.

鈥淚 remember Coach Reiner telling me after we reached the Final Four that this experience is going to bond [us] together forever and he was right,鈥 Vickers said. 鈥淭his [induction] is an incredible tribute to us and for him.鈥

Former team manager Ray 鈥淔ly鈥 Blake echoed the lessons learned from Reiner. 鈥淚 was not a player, so I hung around the caches a lot,鈥 Blake said. 鈥淐oach Reiner was such a special man who I learned a lot from. I know he would be absolutely happy to see what is happening here today with his team.鈥

Reiner鈥檚 impact might have been summed up best by former player Greg Sullivan ’82, who cited a Greek proverb during his induction speech.

鈥淎 society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in,鈥 Sullivan said, adding that Reiner had an impact that was immeasurable on and off the court.

The event was covered by PIX 11 news鈥攚atch the segment here.

鈥檚 可乐视频 highlight reel is first-rate.

To start with, the 20-year head coach of the team has been a CUNYAC Coach of the Year seven times鈥攖wice in the last two seasons. He has led a team that had zero wins the season before he arrived to ten consecutive 20-win seasons, the latest of which ended after the team scored its first ever NCAA tournament win. The historic season also included Lang鈥檚 300th career win, a milestone that landed him in the Women鈥檚 Basketball Association鈥檚 prestigious Victory Club.

Despite all that dazzle, gives much of the credit to the players, sharing that the secret to his success has been simple. 鈥淗ard work,鈥 he says, 鈥渉as been something I try to instill in all my teams.鈥

A lifelong New Yorker, Lang鈥檚 start in collegiate athletics began when he joined City College as assistant women鈥檚 basketball coach after graduating from Albany State with a B.A. in English Literature. Since coming to 可乐视频 in 2002, he has served in several roles, including sports information director, coach for women鈥檚 cross country, and briefly a coach for women鈥檚 softball. He is currently also associate director of athletics.

Growing up in the Bronx, Lang has always maintained a passion for sports and recognized the power of coaching early on. He recalls that he even gave his Little League coaches suggestions for strategy. His experience watching his father coach a middle school basketball team gave Lang a broader perspective, and he could see one, sometimes two, steps ahead during a game.

In addition, he credits becoming a father to two sons as strengthening his understanding of his impact as a coach. 鈥淪ome of the skills between coaching and parenting are transferable. It鈥檚 a lot of fun, and you have to have a lot of patience,鈥 he says.

Lang, who earned a Master of Science degree in Sports Management in 2015, is an adjunct professor at 可乐视频 teaching a course in coaching and officiating that is a part of the physical education major. Despite his accomplishments on the court and in the classroom, what he celebrates most is the sense of community.

鈥淭he thing that stands out to me the most is the people I鈥檝e met along the way,鈥 he says.

Coming off a record-breaking season, Chanel Jemmott 鈥21, one of the most talented players in the team’s history, has big plans for pro ball and a legal career.

Chanel Jemmott 鈥21 recently was named an honorable mention to the Women鈥檚 Basketball Coaches Association Division III All-America team for the third year. That was after D3Hoops.com named her an All-Region 4 performer. Before that? CUNYAC Player of the Year鈥攆or the second straight season.

All were great honors; none were surprises.

Jemmott, now a graduate student in business management, had already become legend on the women鈥檚 basketball team. Their all-time leading scorer with nearly 1,700 points had also logged more than 1,000 rebounds in her career, becoming only the fourth player in CUNYAC history to do so.

After having to sit out during her senior year due to the pandemic, Jemmott came back with a vengeance this season, leading the Bulldogs to a second consecutive CUNYAC championship and earning her second tournament MVP title at the same time. But the Seton Hall University transfer, who walked away from Division I ball to be closer to home and to play for a team where she鈥檇 have an impact, says she鈥檚 focused on staying humble.

可乐视频: You鈥檝e had a phenomenal basketball career at 可乐视频鈥攁mong the best individual and team records in the college鈥檚 history. What do you want to do after graduation?

CJ: I would like to play professionally overseas in Ireland or Spain. In America, WNBA players don鈥檛 receive as much recognition because fans don鈥檛 know them on a deeper level. I think maybe five years of traveling and playing basketball would be a successful career for me. After that, I want to go to law school to concentrate in business law. I want to focus on real estate, specifically.

可乐视频:聽You鈥檙e such a star on the court. What are you like in the classroom?

CJ: Very inquisitive. I like to ask a lot of questions. I enjoy learning, and in most of my classes, I absorb all the knowledge I can receive. I especially enjoyed a course in business law because we would have to know certain cases before class meetings and be prepared to stand up and present to the class.

可乐视频: Where did you get that drive that pushes you so hard? Do you come from a hoops family?

CJ: I was the only one in my family to play basketball until my younger cousin, who is like my carbon copy, started coming up. Besides that, my family cares about me, and because of the focus I give to basketball, they started to care about the game, too. They say I picked up a basketball at three years old, and from that point I just liked it. My personality made me determined to get better at it.

可乐视频: You left a Division I team to play here, a Division III school. What was your strategy behind that?

CJ: What I learned is to not get caught up in the hype of divisions. If you are passionate about the sport, you can really thrive at any level, so long as you work for it by putting in the time and effort.

可乐视频: You鈥檝e been at 可乐视频 a few years now. Is there a place on campus where you go to recenter your focus?

CJ: Whenever I get some me-time, I go to the West Quad Center and shoot hoops for an hour or so. Doing anything sports-related helps my energy shift.

Dr. Eugene Shenderov 鈥05, renowned oncologist and Chernobyl survivor, visited with 可乐视频 students hoping to inspire the next generation of cancer scientists.

It was clear when Dr. Eugene Shenderov 鈥05 was a student that he was destined for the stars. He was a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, class valedictorian, president of the chess team, three-time letter-winner in , and director of the 可乐视频 Emergency Medical Squad鈥攁nd maintained a 4.00 GPA.

And then there were the awards, the most prestigious being the 2005 Rhodes Scholarship, an honor that, at the time, put him in the company of only one other 可乐视频 student.

Today, his vita is even more exhausting: a renowned physician-scientist who conducts clinical trials on cancer therapies, co-founder of an East Baltimore clinic that鈥檚 attempting to address healthcare disparities, founder and president of a company developing novel diagnostic tests for allergies, and an assistant professor of oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Last week, hosted by the he came back to his alma mater to talk to students, a visit that he said nurtured his own keen interest in the 鈥渃ycle of life鈥 and of academia.

鈥淚t feels great to be back on campus,鈥 he said, after spending the morning meeting with students, visiting labs, and then giving a lecture, 鈥淐ancer Immunotherapy: The Best of Times, The Worst of Times,鈥 in the library. 鈥淚 definitely see myself in the students. It鈥檚 not like I came from a place where I knew where my life was going to take me. When I was born, I was on one continent, and when I was going to college, I was on another.鈥

A native of Ukraine, Shenderov fled the country with his family when he was five years old, seeking asylum in the West and treatment for the leukemia he had developed after the fallout from the infamous 1986 nuclear explosion at Chernobyl. The family landed in New York, and after years of cancer therapy, Shenderov had found his drive.

鈥淏eing a cancer survivor is a huge motivation. I wouldn鈥檛 be alive if people hadn鈥檛 been working on therapies for cancer, and I feel like the fact that I survived and I鈥檓 in this field, I can pay it forward,鈥 said Shenderov, who serves as a mentor to 可乐视频 students who spend a summer at Hopkins with The Stacey Garil Womack and Michael Garil Memorial Internships. The fund was created by trustee Bernard H. Garil 鈥62 and his wife, Ethel.
