A reminder of the roots of the month-long holiday and a call to celebrate black history and culture year-round were key messages in the afternoon program.

On February 6, members of the 可乐视频 campus community gathered in the grand lobby of the Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts to kickoff Black History Month. Hosted by the Office of Diversity and Equity Programs, celebration highlights included a performance by students from the 可乐视频 Conservatory of Music, directed by Malcolm Merriweather, assistant professor and director of choruses; alumnus and violinist Devon Webster; and a poetry reading by Rosamond King, associate professor of English and director of the college鈥檚 Ethyl R. Wolfe Institute of the Humanities.

In her opening remarks President Michelle J. Anderson highlighted renowned alumni who themselves have contributed to history, including award-winning authors Gloria Naylor, Paule Marshall, and Paul Beatty; New York jurist Sterling Johnson and one of the newest district court judges in the United States, Jason Pulliam; New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams; journalist and CNN anchor Don Lemon, 鈥渁nd the person closest to our heart and the most outstanding alum that any institution could ever claim, Shirley Chisholm,鈥 said Anderson.

Africana Studies Professor and Chair Prudence Cumberbatch invoked historian Carter G. Woodson, the creator, in 1926, of Negro History Week. 鈥淲oodson understood that having a sense of one鈥檚 history, or as he said, tradition, was critical to the future of the race. He said, 鈥榯hose who have no record of what their forbears have accomplished lose the inspiration that comes from the teaching of biography and history,鈥欌 said Cumberbatch. 鈥淲hile Black History Month is a time for celebration and recognition, it should also be a call for us to reflect on how little we know, and how that lack of knowledge is passed down through the generations. As we celebrate BHM, let us work to ensure that the mission of Woodson continues in a substantive way, not just in February, but all year long.鈥

Vice President Ron Jackson of the Division of Student Affairs spoke of being 鈥渦napologetically black,鈥 and Undergraduate Student Government Vice President Jessica Johnson spoke of the feeling of community she has experienced. 鈥淚n my very first semester here, I attended a number of black history programs; there was an entire calendar. I didn鈥檛 expect that,鈥 said Johnson. 鈥淚 [learned] I can be a black woman in this space and not have to worry about how I wear my hair, how I dress, how I speak. . . . Not everyone can say 鈥業鈥檓 a black person, but I matter at my school.鈥欌

Chief Diversity Officer Anthony Brown was last to speak, acknowledging members of the campus who had contributed to the program, including students whose art decorated the grand lobby, and President Anderson. 鈥淔rom day one, she has given me license to celebrate the great diversity that we have here at 可乐视频, allowing me the privilege to be able to celebrate us,鈥 said Brown and concluded, 鈥淗ave a happy day!鈥

The Black History Month kickoff was part of a larger initiative called We Stand Against Hate, an initiative often featuring lectures, workshops, concerts, programs, and events that reflect our ongoing commitment to elevating dialogue, enhancing understanding and compassion, and celebrating the voices that make up our diverse campus community.

Lawrence Burian discussed his father Andrew Burian and his stunning autobiography, A Boy from Bustina: A Son. A Survivor. A Witness.

鈥淚 am not a philosopher. I am not a historian. I am not even a writer. What I am, is a witness to the Holocaust. I have witnessed much. I have experienced much.鈥 So opens the prologue to A Boy from Bustina: A Son. A Survivor. A Witness. (Yad Vashem, 2016) by Andrew Burian. In 1944, at the age of 13, was wrenched from his comfortable home in Czechoslovakia (now Ukraine) and imprisoned, first in the Mateszalka Ghetto in Hungary, and then in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp where his mother, grandfather, and grand-uncle were killed. Liberated by the U.S. Army, and reunited with his father and brother, he eventually emigrated to the United States and went on to make a new life, with a loving family and a robust Jewish community to buoy him. Silent for 15 years after his liberation, Burian became dedicated to Holocaust education and remembrance, ultimately publishing, at the age of 86, his gripping tale.

On November 25, Burian鈥檚 son Lawrence鈥攚ho, inspired by his father, has also champions the cause of Holocaust remembrance鈥攕poke about A Boy from Bustina to a packed audience in the Woody Tanger Auditorium at the . The lecture was part of the college鈥檚 We Stand Against Hate initiative. As he opened the talk, Lawrence Burian explained that this was a bittersweet moment, the first appearance in which his father鈥攚ho sat front and center with his wife Ruth Burian 鈥61鈥攚as not participating as a lecturer, due to health issues.

Six Million Individual Holocausts

Burian recounted his father鈥檚 story from passages in the book and his memories and impressions of growing up with a Holocaust survivor, punctuated by moments of warm banter with his mother and father.

After he arrived in the United States, 17-year-old Andrew Burian spoke little about the Holocaust; over the years his wife had pieced together enough to obtain what he calls 鈥渁n incomplete understanding,鈥 鈥淭here have been so many studies done of the effect of trauma on people who have experienced it,鈥 said Lawrence Burian about his father鈥檚 initial silence. 鈥淭he experience of survivors not speaking for many, many years if at all is not unique to survivors. . . . When you tell a story, you are putting a beginning a middle and an end to [it], and that itself is containing it. When something is so raw and so powerful and so painful, it鈥檚 hard even to do that. You need somebody ready to listen and how to listen.

Very slowly he began to tell his children some of his experiences in a way he considered 鈥渁ge appropriate.鈥

鈥淎s my father got older and became more secure with his life, with his family, with his position in society, he became more able to speak. I, as the youngest child, learned and heard more of the story than my siblings did My father would start, much as the book does, when I was little boy, telling me not about the Holocaust but with his childhood, and to appreciate what it was like to grow up in that kind of Jewish community and what those values were. It was only as I got older that the stories became more serious.鈥

It was at the urging of his children and encouragement from Elie Wiesel鈥檚 famous directive, 鈥淚f you listen to a witness, you become a witness,鈥 that convinced Andrew Burian to speak out after 51 years of silence. It was and is an act of great bravery for a survivor to reach into his memory and mine the horrors of the Holocaust. There were times Burian would stop writing for months. 鈥淓ach experience is as unique as man himself,鈥 he writes in A Boy from Bustina, 鈥渁nd because of this, I do not think that it was a Holocaust; rather there were six million individual Holocausts.鈥

Ingenuity. Luck. Divine Intervention.

Feelings of guilt remained with Burian after he was liberated, as did the universal question 鈥渨hy me?鈥 asked by many survivors; 1.5 million Jewish children perished during the Holocaust, so how did he make it? Lawrence Burian, read a passage that dug into his father鈥檚 understanding of why and how he managed to stay alive:

鈥業 would like to state for the record that my survival is no virtue of mine. Nor was it a brilliant deed on my part. It was not heroic nor the result of the execution of a well-thought-out plan. Or even the result of a conscious effort. One might think a guiding hand from above, or at least miraculous coincidences were the instrument of my survival. I certainly subscribe to that theory, although I fail to see why I was saved, or why I would be the recipient of such grace.鈥

鈥業f one does not wish to pry into that which we do not understand, then the theory of the survival instinct, coupled with a strong unrelenting will to live with a good dose of luck, is a very strong argument.鈥

Lawrence Burian summed it up as ingenuity. Luck. Divine intervention.

鈥淣ow You Are All Witnesses鈥

The younger Burian read accounts of his father鈥檚 transport by cattle car to a ghetto in Hungary and then to two death camps; of narrow escapes, including one in which another boy was killed in his stead; acts of great cruelty; and some of bravery and kindness.

鈥楾hey tried to turn me into an animal,鈥 says Andrew Burian in the autobiography. 鈥淭hey failed with me but not with everyone. However, in the process I became an orphan, a killer, a displaced person, and an immigrant. Today I am a husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and friend. Yet people think of me as a survivor. I am. I did. But for me, it is not enough just to survive; I must bear witness.鈥

The phrase 鈥渘ot everyone鈥 struck one student in the audience. 鈥淲e often are told the story of the Holocaust; these are things that the Nazi did, but the story I heard from you, and from your father through you, is that these are the changes they did affect in people,鈥 he stated during the question-and-answer period after the talk. 鈥淭he main actors were not German Nazis themselves, although they were in the background orchestrating. It was the Hungarian soldiers. It was the Roma capo that killed a young Jewish boy. It was a German communist. It was the Czech women who resisted. For me, it was a cautionary tale of how genocidal people get others to do their will or to resist them.鈥

Lawrence Burian was grateful to the student for bringing up the subject. 鈥淚 purposely chose excerpts from the book that did not have a single Nazi soldier taking action,鈥 said Burian. 鈥淣ow you cannot read this book without coming away with the absolute evil of what the Nazi soldiers were and did. But I think there is a very, very important message about what people can become and how people can get caught up and actually in some ways be worse than the actual leaders themselves. And there are incredible stories of people standing up to the Nazi rule and being successful. I don鈥檛 want to judge anybody; I don鈥檛 know if I would be that brave. Nobody should ever judge anybody until they鈥檝e been in their shoes, but there is a statement of how do we react. My father doesn鈥檛 sugarcoat anything in the book, including his own behaviors, that until this day he horribly regrets.鈥

Burian concluded with a passage from his father鈥檚 most recent talk to students: 鈥楢s I look at my audience, I see young, vibrant educated women and men. I see the future of these wonderful United States. And what I see is good. I feel compelled to beg you not to be complacent about the evil of discrimination or be tolerant of any form of prejudice and baseless hatred regardless of how cloaked or disguised. Be vigilant, and take responsibility, which is yours. You are our future. Each one of you will be more or less in a position to influence the course of your generation鈥檚 lives so that something like the Holocaust never happens again. I hope you will. I am confident you will. I know you will.鈥

The event was accompanied by the exhibit, BESA: A Code of Honor. Muslim Albanians Who Rescued Jews During the Holocaust, which was on display in the 可乐视频 Library through December 1. The exhibit was developed by Yad Vashem and was on loan from the American Society for Yad Vashem, .

The lecture was part of the 鈥淲e Stand Against鈥 series that has been a campus fixture since spring 2017. Throughout the year, the initiative features lectures, workshops, concerts, programs, and events that reflect 可乐视频鈥檚 ongoing commitment to elevating dialogue, enhancing understanding and compassion, and celebrating the voices that make up our diverse campus community.

As part of the ongoing initiative, We Stand Against Hate: Enhancing Understanding and Compassion at 可乐视频, Rabbi Michael Lerner, the political activist, author, and psychotherapist visited the campus last week to give a talk entitled “Strategies to Combat Racism and Anti-Semitism: The psychodynamics of American Politics.”

Lerner advised the campus community to stand for something, articulate a desirable world vision, and shoot for the stars.

“Martin Luther King did not become an icon of social change by giving a speech that said 鈥業 have a complaint,” said Lerner. “No, he dreamed of a different kind of world.”

Lerner, who describes himself as a spiritual progressive, was lamenting that in the current political environment, it can be easier to protest than to map out and actively work towards positive change. He also encouraged young people to dream big.

“Every fundamental change that ever happened did so because people were willing to stand up for something they believed in that was totally unrealistic at the time,” he said. “Don鈥檛 waste your time on this planet fighting for what people tell you is realistic. Instead, go for your highest vision of the good.”

Lerner is the rabbi of Beyt Tikkin Synagogue in Berkeley, Calif. He was one of the leaders of The University of California at Berkeley鈥檚 infamous Free Speech Movement in the 1960s and he went on to get involved in the anti-Vietnam War movement, organizing meetings featuring leading figures of the day like activist and boxing legend Muhammad Ali. He has remained active in social change movements and has merged his training as a psychotherapist and philosopher to looking broadly at ethical issues facing society.

He is also the author of several books, including Embracing Israel/Palestine: A Strategy to Heal and Transform the Middle East (North Atlantic Books, 2011), The Left Hand of God: Taking Back America from the Religious Right (HarperOne, 2006), and with Cornel West, Jews and Blacks: Let the Healing Begin (Putnam Adult, 1995).

The WSAH program series, now in its second year, was developed in response to both challenges the college has faced with conflict on campus and to national political divisions. Begun by President Michelle J. Anderson, WSAH aims to increase the campus discourse around difficult political issues while also enhancing compassion, inclusiveness, and peace.

City College English Lecturer Pam Laskin says she wants to “build bridges and dismantle walls” with her newest book Ronit & Jamil (Katherine Tegan Books 2017), a retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet that transports the star-crossed lovers to the modern-day Israel-Palestine conflict. She, along with four City College theater students, visited the 可乐视频 campus on April 24 to present a staged reading of the book, which National Book Award-winner Jacqueline Woodson has hailed as “supremely specific and stunningly universal.”

“The book is so significant during these times because of the political landscape, which is uncomfortably dangerous,” says Laskin. “What the book offers is peace as a possibility, especially among young people. I wanted to perform this at 可乐视频 because there is such a diverse student population, and since I will be performing it again in the fall, I am hoping that the Jewish and Islamic student organizations will get involved. This is also a book about communication, how we make stories come alive鈥攁n important message for students everywhere.

Actors included Marissa Alejandre, Brandon Lewis Torres, Chris Laing, and Bibin Shrestha.

The We Stand Against Hate: Enhancing Understanding and Compassion initiative at 可乐视频 was launched in spring 2017 with a series of lectures, panel discussions, workshops, concerts, art exhibitions, and other special events across campus. The series aims to elevate the discourse around challenging political issues and foster inclusiveness on campus.
