(Left to right) Rami Sadovnik (student), Carrie Sadovnik (Director of Environmental Health and Safety/Sustainability), Stalin Espinal ’18, Paige Rushing (student), and Devlin McKenna (Office of Information Technology Services) help with the new green infrastructure project.

An innovative and environmentally friendly green infrastructure test bed received the finishing touches on June 15 when volunteers planted and mulched over 2,700 plugs of northeast native plants near the sidewalk between the Lily Pond and Whitman Hall.

The project was led by Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Associate Director of the Science and Resiliency Institute at Jamaica Bay Jennifer Cherrier, the Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety/Sustainability, along with support from the college鈥檚 Facilities, Planning and Operations, and student, staff and faculty volunteers, including Professor of Television, Radio & Emerging Media Katherine G. Fry.

Earth and Environmental Sciences and Associate Director of the Science and Resiliency Institute at Jamaica Bay Jennifer Cherrier (right) oversees the installation of the hybrid ecoWEIR system at 可乐视频 that students, faculty and staff helped to install. The project will serve as a place for interdisciplinary research for not only the campus but the entire CUNY family and affiliated collaborators, the surrounding community, and the region to help educate and partner with them on issues related to stormwater and climate resiliency.鈥疕elping Cherrier are students Wilson Deng (left) and Paige Rushing.

鈥淥ur campus has been long prized for its beauty. Beyond adding lush meadow greenery, Professor Cherrier鈥檚 ecoWEIR test bed bolsters biodiversity and offers transformative learning and research opportunities. This and other green space initiatives epitomize our commitment to a sustainable campus,鈥 said Carrie Sadovnik, Director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety/Sustainability.

The approximately 455 square-feet test bed of drought and flood-resilient plants, which also attract pollinators to further aid the environment, was designed by Office Landscape and Urban Design, a Brooklyn-based and minority-owned design firm, in consultation with Cherrier. The site will be used for interdisciplinary research by both students and faculty and functions both as a traditional green infrastructure 鈥攕imilar to what is currently being installed by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection throughout New York City鈥攁s well as a green infrastructure called , a hybrid system developed by Cherrier鈥檚 research.

Both types of green infrastructure, traditional and hybrid, are used to help manage and filter out pollutants from stormwater runoff as well as other surface and surficial groundwater flows into aquatic systems. However, the hybrid ecoWEIR system is designed to give nature a boost to maximize pollutant removal and allow for fit-for-purpose water reuse. The ecoWEIR system is also being piloted in to remove phosphate from Prospect Park鈥檚 waterways to help offset toxic algae blooms that have been plaguing the lake for the past decade.

Current Sustainability Coordinator Stalin Espinal ’18, who studied Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences, holds up one of the plants for the project.

Cherrier added that in addition to the imminent research that her group will be doing at the test bed site鈥攊ncluding that of Ph.D. student Nia Rene, M.S. student Paige Rushing, and undergraduate student Sarah Maria Dos Santos鈥攖he project will serve as a place for interdisciplinary research for not only the campus but the entire CUNY family and affiliated collaborators, the surrounding community, and the region to help educate and partner with them on issues related to stormwater and climate resiliency.

鈥淲hile I was proud to lead the effort, I cannot thank Carrie Sadovnik, Director of Environmental Health and Safety and Sustainability, her staff, my graduate student Paige, the Facilities team, as well as other 可乐视频 and CUNY faculty, staff, and students enough for coming together this past month to help make this happen,鈥 Cherrier said. 鈥淚 am also indebted to the 可乐视频 administration for their long-term support of this project as well as to my colleagues at for their collaborative support and contributions to ecoWEIR throughout the years and, finally, I鈥檓 thankful for initial funding for this work provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.鈥

Rushing, an earth and environmental sciences graduate student, participated in the gardening of the green space event. Rushing has been analyzing the ecoWEIR system for her master鈥檚 thesis which explores the effects of nutrient concentrations in stormwater runoff and discovering how effective the system is as a nature-based solution for stormwater management.

鈥淭his planting event was one of the final stages in completing the installation. We planted hundreds of native perennials and have been working over the past month to fill the excavated site,鈥 Rushing said. 鈥淕etting the system in the ground was a large task and rigorous, so it鈥檚 great that we had [可乐视频] facilities personnel and volunteers to help with the planting and all the other stages of the installation process. There is still more to learn through the research that will be conducted in this space.鈥

Rushing is looking forward to watching the garden grow and is optimistic about the future of the green space.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited to watch the garden grow throughout the next year and to work on it because I enjoy being outside in nature. I feel optimistic about future research that will happen in this new green space.鈥

可乐视频 has once again been included as one of the nation鈥檚 top environmentally friendly colleges, according to聽.

The Princeton Review selected 455 colleges based on its 2021-22 surveys from students and administrators at 713 institutions concerning their college鈥檚 dedication to being sustainably eco-friendly. The company鈥檚 editors reviewed more than 25 survey data points to select the top schools.

Through its faculty, 可乐视频 is a leader in sustainability related research and education. The Center for the Study of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Urban Ecology and Environment Program, and the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay are just some of the different research initiatives on campus. The college offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary undergraduate program in urban sustainability, offering three major concentrations in environmental science, economics, and sociology for students to choose from.

The Campus Sustainability Council is raising awareness in its commitment to reduce the college鈥檚 carbon footprint through campus-based education, research, community-based collaboration, services, and operations. It works with the college鈥檚 Office of Facilities, Planning and Operations and Sustainable CUNY to develop an energy master plan and implement efficiency projects, including LED lighting retrofits and steam trap replacements. The council has also participated in identifying and pursuing green infrastructure opportunities to help manage stormwater, increase biodiversity, and reduce energy costs from cooling, including pollinator plant beds and a community garden near the Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts, which is also a LEED certified building.

The college and the Campus Sustainability Council also engages the student body in sustainability planning, implementation, policy, and initiatives, through undergraduate student government, student-led clubs and organizations, and campus events. Students are primary partners in the campus-wide initiative to eliminate and reduce the use of single-use plastics throughout 可乐视频, in an effort to address the negative impact of plastic pollution on our environment.

The Princeton Review gave each college a 鈥済reen rating鈥 score on a scale of 60 to 99 based on the school鈥檚 overall environmental awareness. The universities that earned a score of 80 or higher were picked from the Guide to Green Colleges. Out of the 455 colleges, 421 are in the United States, 26 in Canada, two are in Taiwan, and one each from Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, and Morocco. Additionally, 31 out of the 455 colleges earned a green rating score of 99. The schools are listed alphabetically in the guide and are not ranked overall from 1 to 455.

The guide ranks colleges based on their commitment to sustainability and determines if the students have a healthy and viable campus quality of life and how environmental policies are being utilized. It also shows how well a campus is preparing students for jobs in the evolving green economy of the 21st century as well as for citizenship in a society that is focused on addressing environmental concerns and opportunities. More information on the methodology can be found聽.

The campus was picked with 419 others from across the globe that prove their commitment to the environment and sustainability and educating students in these areas.

可乐视频 is pleased to announce that it is one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible colleges, according to .

The guide highlights colleges where students have a campus quality of life that is both healthy and sustainable. It also shows how well a campus is preparing students for employment in the clean-energy economy of the 21st century, as well as for citizenship in a world now defined by environmental concerns and opportunities, and how environmentally responsible a school’s policies are. More on the methodology can be found .

鈥淲e are proud of this recognition of our work to enhance sustainability on campus, as we seek to expand and deepen green practices and become more environmentally friendly,鈥 said President Michelle J. Anderson.

可乐视频,聽along with other CUNY campuses,聽accepted former聽New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg鈥檚聽challenge to reduce its聽carbon footprint by 30% between 2007 and 2017.聽The college continues these efforts with the governor鈥檚 BuildSmart2025 program and other projects to improve energy efficiency on campus and help reduce CUNY鈥檚 carbon footprint.

In addition to offering a bachelor鈥檚 degree in urban sustainability, along with many sustainability-focused academic course offerings,聽可乐视频 has established a聽10-Year Campus Sustainability聽Plan that considers several聽operational聽areas: energy, water, transportation, waste management/recycling, procurement, food and nutrition, education and outreach, and buildings and grounds.

To date, the college has implemented several changes aimed at increasing its sustainability. In聽April 2019, it joined the REV Campus Challenge and was recognized as an 鈥淎chiever鈥 member for its initiatives and efforts to improve energy efficiency and conservation. Achiever-level members are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and have dedicated staff to focus on clean-energy investments.

Also, the college鈥檚 newest edifice, the Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts, is LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a designation that has come to be the gold standard in the industry for sustainable buildings. The Tow Center opened in 2018 with low water-use toilets, highly efficient HVAC and lighting systems, and recycled construction materials.

Other examples of how the college is a leader in environmentally friendly practices include:

  • retrofitting laboratory hoods and ventilation equipment in science facilities to increase energy efficiency (the college was the first CUNY institution to introduce energy-reduction measures during peak usage periods);
  • students from the Health and Nutrition Science Department composting organic waste for use at Floyd Bennett Field; and
  • increasing the use of natural cleaning products on campus.

The Princeton Review chose the 420 schools in the guide based on its survey of administrators at 835 colleges in 2020鈥21 about their institutions鈥 commitments to the environment and sustainability. The company’s editors analyzed more than 25 survey data points to select the schools. This rating, on a scale of 60 to 99, provides a comprehensive measure of a school’s performance as an environmentally aware and prepared institution. Colleges that earned a Green Rating score of 80 or higher were chosen for the Guide to Green Colleges. Of the 420 schools, 391 are in the United States, 26 in Canada, and one each in Ecuador, Egypt, and Greece. The schools are listed alphabetically in the guide and not ranked overall from 1 to 420.

“We strongly recommend 可乐视频 to students who care about the environment and want to study and live at a green college,” said Rob Franek, The Princeton Review‘s editor-in-chief. 鈥溈衫质悠 offers excellent academics and demonstrates a commitment to sustainability that is exemplary on many counts.鈥

Just in time for Earth Day, 可乐视频 brings to its students, faculty, and staff a new partnership with , a local community supported agriculture program (CSA). Each week, members of the campus community get a farm share that includes fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables.

In the last two weeks, the program has provided spinach, mint, carrots, apples, kale, mushrooms, and much more for roughly 100 可乐视频 customers.

Carrie Sadovnik, chair of the 可乐视频 Sustainability Council says the idea to engage the campus with a farm share program came up when she worked with students during last year鈥檚 sustainability fair. She realized after speaking with other people on campus that there was a fair amount of interest, and started reaching out to local organizations.聽She discovered Corbin Hill, which had the most flexible options for payments and weekly commitments.

“They offer a more appealing model, especially for a community where you have students who are not necessarily on campus every week,” says Sadovnik.

She also liked that Corbin Hill has a focus on connecting low-income and food-desert communities with regional farms. “They make the community supported agriculture model accessible,” she says.

Sadovnik enlisted a few students from the 可乐视频 Urban Sustainability Program to help coordinate the food share and run the distribution every week.

The college had to commit to providing at least 30 to 40 customers per week, a goal that has been far surpassed already鈥攚ith its 100 weekly members, 可乐视频 is now Corbin Hill鈥檚 largest customer.
