  • The Last Resort Artist Retreat, a residency program centered on leisure as healing for Black creatives;
  • The Black Baltimore Digital Database, a community-powered archive preserving local cultural memory; and
  • Zora鈥檚 Den, a thriving space for Black women writers that evolved from an online forum to a full-fledged network of workshops, readings, and sisterhood.

This exhibition contextualizes her art within the concept of saturation, using this idea as an aesthetic and conceptual tool to address themes of the politics of visibility at the center of her practice. In Willis鈥 photographs, saturation reveals the depth of feeling lying at the heart of creative and lived experience. Informed by personal, cultural, and historical influences鈥攆rom her closet to the Civil War鈥攁nd including fashion as a practice of freedom and aspiration for the Black community, Willis focuses on sites of emotional and aesthetic intimacy that actively engage expressions of beauty in the everyday.

Pause The Game /best-of-bc/pause-the-game/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 16:26:50 +0000 /?p=102468 Destiny Carter wants to transform the fundamentals of one of the most innovative sectors in tech.

The post Pause The Game appeared first on 可乐视频.

]]>
Destiny Carter is a creative (a sketch artist and an actress) and a hard-core gamer. She鈥檚 also a senior and first-generation college student majoring in art听with a minor in computer science who鈥檚 a little bored with what she calls a lack of innovation in the gaming industry.

She wants to see the design and user experience level up and plans to devote her career to just that.

This summer, she鈥檚 taking an art class and working at the Women鈥檚 Center听as a member of 鈥淭he Squad,鈥 a close-knit group of students that plans events and outreach. She also serves on the e-board of the center鈥檚 Women鈥檚 History Month Committee.

We spoke with her about her college support system, what she does to tap into her creative side, and how she plans to change the gaming industry.

What inspired you to turn your passion for video games into a career?

I love video games, whether it’s single-player, person versus person, or RPG. I play tons of them and watch Twitch streamers. I want to be a part of building the next generation of video games in whatever way that I can. That’s why I was originally a computer science major with a focus on multimedia computing, but I decided that digital art was more of my path. People talk about the software engineers or the front-end or back-end people, but no one talks about the people who work on how you interact with a video game, website, or app. I鈥檓 integrating what I love and what I鈥檓 good at.

What do you want to change about video games?

I want to use design to make video games feel more seamless and intuitive to play in terms of navigating menus and customization. I want to make games feel better to click through and less frustrating. It鈥檚 all the same fonts, the same basic formula. As a designer, I would be bolder and lean into the concepts that we’re trying to portray and not the simple formula that everyone uses.

There鈥檚 not much innovation in video games right now at big companies鈥攖hey鈥檙e all just doing the same thing over and over again. I hope to someday work for an indie video game company or a start-up that鈥檚 not afraid to try something new. I don’t mind making a bit less than the designers at big companies if I get to do work that I’m proud of.

What is it like being a member of 鈥淭he Squad鈥 at the Women鈥檚 Center?

The Women’s Center has really helped me. At first, I was a bit shy, but everyone there made me feel so welcome. They鈥檙e very empathetic and have supported me through tough times鈥攁 support system is so important to be successful in college, especially if you don鈥檛 have a good support system at home. I鈥檓 the oldest child and have two younger sisters, but at the Women’s Center, it’s like I have a bunch of older sisters and sisters closer to my age.听I help run events and outreach, which can impact someone who might not have had that resource before. I was once that student who had nowhere to go after class besides home. That鈥檚 why I love the Women’s Center so much.

You鈥檙e also a part of CUNYEdge.

I wish I had gotten involved in CUNY EDGE sooner. Monique Ngozi Nri [鈥21], the CUNY EDGE director at 可乐视频, inspired me to apply for scholarships. I didn鈥檛 think I had anything interesting to write about in the essay, but Monique encouraged me to go for it. So I applied and I got it. I owe a lot of my personal growth to CUNY EDGE. Without it, and the Women鈥檚 Center, I think that I would鈥檝e dropped out of school. People pushed me and cheered me on, always helping me figure out what to do, who to talk to, and where to go. Before, I was kind of lost.

You鈥檙e taking a summer class. How is that going?

I鈥檓 taking ART 2210, which I鈥檝e had a lot of fun in. It has helped me develop my drawing skills. I decided that a summer course couldn鈥檛 hurt鈥攊t could only help me. I like the fast pace of summer classes because they鈥檙e not spread out throughout the whole semester. I like being active on campus in the nice weather.

You sound like a very creative person.

I鈥檝e always been a dreamer. One of my hobbies is acting. I love the rush of getting on stage. I did theater in high school, but now I mostly act in student films. I also read a lot of fantasy and fiction, listen to music, and write. I鈥檓 happier now that I鈥檝e leaned into the creative side of me.

CUNY Presidential Professor of Art Archie Rand from the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts will debut his new series, at the Jerusalem Biennale opening in March.

Rand was selected as the sole American representative at the highly selective spring edition of the biennale鈥攐fficially titled Iron Flock鈥浓赌where venues will host 30 exhibitions with the participation of more than 200 renowned artists and curators from all over the world.

Rand鈥檚 series is the only solo exhibition in the event and encapsulates the spirit of the exhibition鈥檚 focus that honors the contributions of women in art and history. His work features impressions drawn from events and myths in the lives of Biblical heroines.

The exhibition is a continuation of Rand鈥檚 50-year artistic enterprise, exploring the Bible and Jewish texts in serialized paintings conceptually informed by 20th-century culture. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and Biblioth猫que Nationale de France, among many others.

The spring biennale is an opportunity to mark more than a decade of creativity and collaboration and to acknowledge the devoted patrons and partners that have helped position the Jerusalem Biennale as the largest platform in the world for contemporary Jewish art.

In 2019, Rand was named a Farash Fellow, which offered a summer residency at the University of Rochester and an unrestricted award of $100,000. The residency coincided with the museum-wide exhibition of Rand鈥檚 1,800-square-foot painting The 613 at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York. The images were published in the best-selling book , which was published in 2015.

Molding Futures /best-of-bc/molding-futures/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 21:03:52 +0000 /?p=91060 Senior Angela Auriti brought back the Ceramics Club. Through her leadership there, she鈥檚 now helping other students ignite their creative spirit.

The post Molding Futures appeared first on 可乐视频.

]]>
Angela Auriti was born to be an artist. In elementary school, she hit notes on her trombone. In her teenage years, she brought blank canvases and other objects to life with paint. In her freshman year at 可乐视频, she studied film. Between then and now, she switched her major to art.听Whether she鈥檚 in the studio or the classroom, the president uses her expertise and talents to support others on their creative journeys.

She aspires to teach children the healing power of art and is taking the first step toward achieving her dream by applying to 可乐视频鈥檚 Art Teacher M.A. program.

When off campus, she plays video games with friends, binges on Netflix shows, and works at a health food store in her home borough of Staten Island.

Why did you choose your art major?

I鈥檝e always been creative. I started playing the trombone in the fourth grade (I still play). I did a painting project for my high school English class, and after that I was painting everything鈥攖he walls, light switches, trash cans, and gifts for family and friends. Then I came to 可乐视频 as a film major, which was great. But when I took an art class as an elective, I loved it so much that I switched my major.

And now you鈥檙e the Ceramics Club president!

It all started when I registered for a ceramics class. I asked my professor, for a friend, if non-ceramics students could use the studio, and she told me that there used to be a Ceramics Club. It stopped during COVID because it couldn鈥檛 be on Zoom. I worked with the former club director to get it up and running again, which is how I became president.

What has that experience been like?听

It was a lot at first. When I re-started the club, I went to the Involvement Fair to get members. I had just found out about it, so I single-handedly created flyers the night before. I ended up getting signatures from 120 people who wanted to join. I love bringing people together, teaching them, and then seeing what they go on to do.听In the studio, I get the best of both worlds.

How would you describe 可乐视频鈥檚 arts community?

It鈥檚 very open. Students get a lot of support from the Art Department. The staff and faculty all work hard to make sure that the students are happy and that the art studio is safe and fun. My faculty adviser, Eto Otitigbe, and the Art Department chair, Mona Hadler, are huge supporters of the School of Media, Visual, and Performing Arts.

What are your goals for after you graduate?听

I鈥檇 love to complete the Art Teacher master鈥檚 program 可乐视频. Art can be therapeutic, so it helps a lot of kids. Besides teaching, I hope to open my own ceramics studio where people can stop by and create.

Held at Barclays Center, the first in-person ceremony in two years featured Mayor Eric Adams, 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Roberta Gbowee, CUNY Chancellor F茅lix V. Matos Rodr铆guez, and other special guests.

Today, 可乐视频 celebrated the achievement of more than 4,000 students at its 2022 Commencement at Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn. The ceremony, which was full of energy, marked the first in-person commencement in two years.

College President Michelle J. Anderson, Provost, and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Anne Lopes, and Vice President for Student Affairs Ron Jackson helped lead the conferring of degrees from the college鈥檚 School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts, Murray Koppelman School of Business, School of Education, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as the .

Anderson lauded the determination of the Class of 2022, saying that despite everything they faced throughout the difficult times of the pandemic, they stayed the course.

鈥淭he graduates sitting here in Barclays today needed an extraordinary kind of commitment to get to these seats,鈥 Anderson said. 鈥淭hey had to tackle rigorous academic work. In so doing, they have been transformed by the power of critical thinking, the scientific method, creativity, and advanced analysis that are the foundations of higher education. They explored new ideas that have shaped their values and beliefs for the future. They have studied with classmates who will become lifelong friends鈥攁nd they have learned from outstanding faculty members who became their cherished mentors.鈥

The college also welcomed several distinguished guests, including Mayor Eric Adams; U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer; New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams; Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso; and the president of New York State Higher Education Services Corporation Dr. Guillermo Linares.

Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of the moment and the impact the Class of 2022 will have on society. 鈥淭his is your moment to make this country what you want it to be.鈥

CUNY was also well-represented, as CUNY Chancellor F茅lix Matos Rodr铆guez; Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Denise Maybank; and CUNY Board of Trustee members Una S. T. Clarke and Brian D. Obergfell, also attended.

Chancellor Rodr铆guez called the day 鈥渁 pure celebration鈥 that validated the graduates鈥 brilliance, grit, and tenacity and congratulated them for overcoming such an extraordinary set of obstacles to ultimately succeed.

Specifically, 可乐视频 conferred 3,195 baccalaureate and 966 master鈥檚 degrees, along with 96 advanced certificates. Included in the Class of 2022 were 10 veterans and service members. In all, 4,257 graduates joined the prestigious 可乐视频 family of more than 160,000 proud alums worldwide.

The valedictorian of the Class of 2022 was Carina D鈥橴rso. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the . D鈥橴rso earned a perfect 4.00 grade point average and graduated summa cum laude. Following commencement, she will pursue graduate studies in human development and education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she plans to concentrate in the arts and learning. The salutatorian was Hafsa Fatima, a Macaulay Honors College graduate and chemistry minor who will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a B.A. in art. She will be attending The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

D鈥橴rso thanked her advisors, peers, and professors for their support and guidance. She also pointed to the influence her grandparents had in her continuing her education. Born and raised in Molise, the smallest region in Italy, neither attended school past the fifth grade. For this reason, D鈥橴rso鈥檚 mother always instilled the importance of education in her and her brother.

鈥淎s a teenager inspired by the values my mother instilled in me, I became galvanized by the idea of becoming an educator,鈥 D鈥橴rso said. 鈥淲hen it was time to apply for colleges, I knew I wanted to be a commuter student so that I could attend school in the heart of New York City, with countless opportunities at my fingertips. Little did I know how this dream would come true. As a member of the Macaulay Honors College and the CUNY Baccalaureate Program for Unique Interdisciplinary Studies, I built my own major, marrying my passions for the arts, education, and social change.鈥

Special honorees included Leymah Roberta Gbowee, who served as the honorary degree recipient and keynote speaker. Gbowee is a 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and renowned human rights leader who led the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace that worked to end the 14-year civil war in Liberia. She is also the founding head of the Liberian Reconciliation Initiative, a forum for the victims and perpetrators of human rights violations to bring about healing and produce a more accurate accounting of the country鈥檚 devastating civil war.

Gbowee, who today is the executive director of Women Peace and Security Network Africa, congratulated the graduates and their families. She told the story about when she learned she had won the Nobel Prize and had her first meeting with fellow Nobel Prize winner Desmond Mpilo Tutu. Relaying the advice Tutu gave her, she told the graduates the three most important things to remember when they win: cultivate and hold the values that brought them to the win; always hold onto their integrity and their voice; and when they succeed, also do good by humanity.

鈥淐lass of 2022, you will win,鈥 Gbowee said. 鈥淚n the midst of your winning, you can鈥檛 give up on your higher power, whatever that is.鈥

Other awardees included Leonard Tow 鈥50, who earned the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Tow is a philanthropist and 可乐视频 Foundation Board of Trustees member. Leonard and his wife, the late Claire Tow 鈥52, established The Tow Foundation in 1988. Through more than 700 fellowships, scholarships, internships, professorships, and teaching awards, they have enriched the quality of intellectual life for 可乐视频’s entire campus by providing the means to allow its students and faculty to become exceptional in their fields.

The couple also donated $10 million for the Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts at 可乐视频, which opened in 2018. The state-of-the-art center has transformed the campus footprint and is home to the Conservatory of Music and the Department of Theater.

鈥淭o the 可乐视频 family, Len, as he is known to us, needs no introduction. It is safe to say that his positive impact on the 可乐视频 community is unparalleled,鈥 Anderson said. In a particularly touching moment, Anderson helped recognize Tow鈥檚 94th birthday, which was May 30, and the college community sang happy birthday, presenting him with a cake.

The recipient of the Presidential Medal of Honor was Jules Coleman 鈥68. Coleman is one of the world鈥檚 most renowned scholars of law and jurisprudence. Widely acknowledged to have created the field of the philosophy of tort law, as well as inclusive legal positivism, Coleman was the first and remains the most influential advocate of a corrective justice approach to tort law. A first-generation college student, Coleman received his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, magna cum laude, from 可乐视频 in 1968; his Ph.D. in philosophy from Rockefeller University in 1972; and his master of studies in law from Yale Law School in 1976.
