Join us as we celebrate Sue Landers鈥檚 What to Carry Into the Future. Landers will be joined in conversation by Professor Celina Su, author of Budget Justice.

About the Book

What to Carry Into the Future emerged from riding every NYC subway from end to end. Set within the city鈥檚 subways, streets, and waterways, the collection charts the continuous aftermath of catastrophe alongside the city鈥檚 many pleasures.听 The collection uses transportation and location as a metaphor and a conduit to explore beleaguered social relationships and standards that are challenged by political and natural forces. When we look for a city鈥檚 infrastructure, where do we find it, what do we see, and what does it tell us about how we鈥檙e living?

Political Science Professor Celina Su has released , a groundbreaking book that challenges the notion of government budgets as boring or merely technical documents. Instead, Su argues, they are powerful moral blueprints that reveal the health鈥攁nd failures鈥攐f our democracy.

In the book, Su calls for a radical reimagining of budgeting as a democratic practice. Through vivid examples and clear analysis, she shows how everyday people can, and must, play a role in shaping public spending to address urgent issues, including skyrocketing housing and food costs, chronic underfunding of schools, unchecked police violence, and the growing toll of climate disasters, like floods and wildfires.

Her academic, pedagogical, and creative work focuses on everyday struggles for collective governance, centering economic democracy and racial justice. In addition to research on political participation, Su鈥檚 writing includes a book of poetry, Landia, two poetry chapbooks, and pieces in New York Times Magazine,听贬补谤辫别谤鈥檚,听n+1, and elsewhere.

On October 20, the Ethyle R. Wolfe Institute for the Humanities will host an online event with Professor Su and writer and podcaster Gabe Dunn for its “New Books by 可乐视频 Faculty” series. More information about this event will be coming soon.

鈥淢ake Asian American History Visible鈥 is available to view on the college library鈥檚 first floor.

To amplify and celebrate the history and contributions of Asian Americans that have been critical to the development of the United States and the world around us, 可乐视频 Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education/Art Education Xia Li has curated the exhibit of literature on display during Asian American and听Pacific Islander Heritage Month.听The collection includes works from Asian American studies classics, as well as books听authored by听AAPI faculty and scholars听from 可乐视频 and CUNY, many of which听have been recently added to the library鈥檚 collection.

鈥淔rom the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, Asian Americans have faced systemic discrimination and prejudice. Their stories have been left out of history textbooks, museums, and popular culture, perpetuating the myth that they are a monolithic group without agency or voice. The hope is that this collection will serve as a reminder of the incredible contributions of those peoples and cultures,鈥 said Li. 鈥淪eeing the exhibit recently, I felt so belonged and valued. It means a lot to AAPI members like me to see a book exhibit that features Asian Americans and celebrates our culture and heritage. I encourage the extended 可乐视频 family to tour the book exhibit and show your support for the AAPI community.鈥

The exhibit is being co-sponsored by the 可乐视频 Library, the School of Education, the American studies program, and the Asian American Faculty and Staff Association, among others. Books will be available for checkout after May 26.

Some highlights from the exhibit selected by Associate Professor Xia Li

Driven Out by Jean Pfaelzer (Public historian, commentator, and Professor of American Studies at the University of Delaware):
鈥淭his is the first book I read on Asian American history, and deeply motivated me for this project. This book educated me on the historical context for the arrival of the first wave of Chinese immigrants in the United States, and the hostility, violence, and extreme discrimination towards Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century that culminated in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. An even stronger message for me from the book is how the early Chinese immigrants fought back by filing legal lawsuits, organizing protests and boycotts, etc.鈥

Streetwise for Book Smarts by Celina Su (Professor of Political Science at 可乐视频):

鈥淚 especially enjoyed discovering new authors and titles that I had not previously encountered. For example, this book examines the efforts of parents and students who sought to improve the quality of education in their local schools. It is relevant for me because as a parent of a minority group, I see how fellow parents struggle and fight and try to make a voice for their children鈥檚 education.鈥

We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future by Deepa Iyer (Leading racial justice activist who teaches in the Asian American studies program at the University of Maryland):

鈥淭his book also stood out for me. I am going to check out this book after the exhibit event. I want to broaden my understanding of the experience and challenges of the other AAPI members. Knowing and understanding the history and experience of each other make us build a more just and equitable future.鈥
