]]> Lyricism, rhythm, concision, musicality… The qualities we often associate with poetry are equally important in a picture book text, and both are best experienced when read aloud. It is no coincidence that many poets have tried their hand at writing picture books, often with tremendous success. For this event, join Matthew Burgess and Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie—both poets, professors, and picture book authors—for a lively discussion and reading of their recent titles, Fireworks and We Go Slow, respectively. A Q&A will follow.

]]> In connection with the current exhibition of Keith Haring prints, this special event is a cozy celebration of art and children’s literature. Associate Professor of English Matthew Burgess will read from his illustrated biography, Drawing on Walls: A Story of Keith Haring, followed by a conversation with Provost April Bedford about the particular magic of picture books. Milk and cookies will be served, and participants are invited to bring a favorite children’s book to share. Co-sponsored by the Art Department, English Department, the Office of the Provost, the Office of Student Affairs, and the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts.

]]> Join us for a poetry reading by U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate Stephanie Pacheco and by ¿ÉÀÖÊÓƵ student poets.

Pacheco has served as both the New York City and New York State Youth Poet Laureate before earning the national title. She currently serves as Broadway Advocacy Coalition’s 2025 Artivism Fellow. She is a long-time advocate for equity in arts and education, having organized with The Healing Centered Schools Task Force and Alliance for Quality Education. She has been highlighted by The Today Show, NPR, and CBS for her poetry and advocacy, and has performed at Barclays Center, Lincoln Center, The Schomburg, Apollo Theater, the Kennedy Center, and more.
