SUMMARY:Buddhist Self-Knowledge Practices: The Sheila and Wilbur Liebson Ethics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, viewing Buddhism from a self-knowledge standpoint\, Professor of Philosophy Christopher W. Gowans (Fordham University) will examine a variety of Buddhist practices鈥攅thical\, philosophical\, and meditative鈥攁s these practices have been understood in the traditional 鈥減ath鈥� approaches (Buddhist practice as a path from suffering to an enlightened life of tranquility and compassion) and the rather different 鈥渆xploration鈥� approach that emerges in Chan and Zen Buddhism (Buddhist practice as expressing and exploring what it means not to be a self). Among Gowan鈥檚 publications is Self-Cultivation Philosophies in Ancient India\, Greece\, and China (Oxford University Press\, 2021).

SUMMARY:Migration\, Citizenship\, and the U.S. Constitution
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Supreme Court narrowly upheld birthright citizenship in June 2026\, and the invocations of competing versions of U\,S\, history in the Trump v Barbara opinion sparked questions about the origins of that bedrock constitutional guarantee. What was citizenship like before the 14th Amendment for politically disfavored groups\, and why is the bedrock guarantee of birthright citizenship in the Constitution? Professor Anna Law\, a scholar of U.S. immigration and constitutional law and history\, is the author of Migration and the Origins of American Citizenship\, a timely new book that addresses these questions. Professor Prudence Cumberbatch\, chair of Africana Studies and a scholar of African American studies\, race\, and gender\, will offer comments.
