Diversity isn鈥檛 just a part of what makes 可乐视频 an exceptional institution, it鈥檚 what drives the campus forward. It runs through classrooms, labs, and every corner of campus life. With students from all walks of life choosing to study at 可乐视频, the administration and staff carry a profound responsibility: to ensure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered鈥攔egardless of their immigration status.

In times of uncertainty, especially for immigrant and undocumented communities, the college stands as a steadfast ally. We are unwavering in our commitment to educating, supporting, and advocating for our immigrant students and their families.

Working Together for a Safe and Supportive Campus

On April 10, the college took an important step toward addressing the systemic challenges faced by immigrant students with the launch of its first-ever Immigrant Student Support Summit.

Spearheaded by President Anderson and Immigrant Student Success Office (ISSO) Director Jes煤s P茅rez, the summit brought together a wide range of student-centered offices for an honest and solutions-driven conversation about transforming the immigrant student experience鈥攆rom application to graduation.

President Anderson opened the two-hour meeting of the minds with a powerful call to action, urging faculty, staff, and administrators to reimagine the student journey and to identify ways 可乐视频 can deliver a more intentional, inclusive, and empowering educational experience.

Framing the discussion around how to fulfill the college鈥檚 promise of a high-quality education for every student, President Anderson guided the group through a thoughtful examination of the bureaucratic hurdles immigrant students often face 鈥 from their initial inquiry to graduation and career readiness.

The summit was well-attended and sparked candid, in-depth conversations about the complex transition immigrant students navigate.

Representatives from essential student-serving offices鈥攊ncluding Admissions, Financial Aid, the Bursar鈥檚 Office, the Office of Scholarships, the Center for Academic Advisement and Student Success, the Registrar, and the Magner Career Center鈥攕hared valuable insights into both the structural barriers students encounter and the opportunities for institutional growth and innovation.

Several key themes emerged from the discussion:

  • Streamlining administrative processes to ease the burden on students and reduce confusion
  • Fostering interdepartmental collaboration to provide more holistic support
  • Expanding visibility and access to resources, especially for undocumented and first-generation students
  • Promoting early engagement with academic advising, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities

The summit closed with a strong, shared commitment to continue this critical work. Participants agreed this inaugural gathering would mark the beginning of an ongoing series of strategic conversations鈥攁ll aimed at reshaping policies, improving coordination across offices, and ensuring that every 可乐视频 student, regardless of immigration status, can pursue their educational goals with dignity, clarity, and confidence.

Teaching and Learning Rights

To help understand the changing landscape, the college also held two 鈥淜now Your Rights Workshops鈥 on February 23 and April 21. The most recent workshop continued the conversation on constitutional rights, focusing on what individuals need to know while in transit to 可乐视频, in the surrounding area, and on campus.

Topics covered included what is considered a public space, what rights apply in different settings, and how to safely navigate interactions with law enforcement.

These sessions provide guidance on how individuals and their families can prepare for a potential law enforcement encounter. Open to students, staff, faculty and community members seeking to protect themselves and support others co-sponsored by ISSO, 可乐视频 Faculty Council and Staff, PSC, We Stand Against Hate, and CUNY Law Immigrant and Non-Citizen Rights Clinic.

ISSO at Your Service and More

While these efforts are often adjusted and refocused, they have been ongoing. Since 2019, 可乐视频 has offered a wide range of dedicated resources to help students manage difficulty situations and thrive. The ISSO office supports, advocates for, and empowers students from a variety of immigration backgrounds through an intentional philosophy of holistic support, including free legal services, help accessing financial aid and counseling, as well as health and wellness offerings, and much more. The ISSO Office is located in 117 Roosevelt Hall and can be contacted at ISSO@brooklyn.cuny.edu or by phone at 718.951.5023.

To help students, as well as faculty and staff, understand their rights no matter of citizenship status, other online resources on both the 可乐视频 and CUNY websites are available, including:

We鈥檙e the Orchestra /best-of-bc/were-the-orchestra/ Wed, 07 Jun 2023 18:25:24 +0000 /?p=71964 Associate Director of Financial Aid Moshe Axelrod 鈥09 M.Mus. finds music in financial aid.

The post We鈥檙e the Orchestra appeared first on 可乐视频.

]]>
As a trained composer, Moshe Axelrod is passionate about music. He also cares deeply about making sure students can afford their education. Within the financial aid office, he carries out his work with the vision of a conductor.

Axelrod鈥檚 understanding of music informs his unique approach to financial aid. In a piece of music, he says, 鈥淚 can look at individual notes, I can look at the structure, and I can look at patterns in that structure.鈥 This awareness of structure has led him to establish consistent and transparent financial aid procedures鈥攁 kind of 鈥渟ystem building鈥 that aims to make it easier for everyone to navigate the process.

Axelrod describes the basic functions of his office: processing the required documents that students submit, advising students on their aid eligibility to help them plan their finances, managing and disseminating information on the sources of aid, and complying with the rules those entities establish. The result, says Axelrod, is the disbursement of millions of dollars in federal and state aid programs.

Describing the challenge of translating labyrinthine federal aid policy 鈥渋nto a business process,鈥 Axelrod envisions a concert hall. 鈥淭he feds are the composer, and we鈥檙e the orchestra. And those of us in leadership positions are the conductors.鈥 Ultimately, he says, 鈥淲e have to figure out how to get this piece of music played.鈥

Axelrod says he fell into financial aid. In the middle of a master鈥檚 degree at 可乐视频, he needed a stable source of income. He ended up working as a college assistant in the financial aid office at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), partially funded through the CUNY Counseling Assistantship Program. After two years in this role, he spent six more as a financial aid counselor at BMCC before coming to 可乐视频 in 2016. Axelrod began at 可乐视频 as an assistant director taking over the advisement unit. He became associate director in 2022.

During this time, Axelrod was also studying and performing music. He earned his B.F.A. in music and audio technology from City College, developing expertise in audio engineering and a familiarity with the work of modern composers like Arvo P盲rt and Steve Reich. Deciding he wanted to study composition with acclaimed 可乐视频 Professor Tania Le贸n, Axelrod enrolled in the college鈥檚 M.Mus. program in composition, graduating in 2009.

Axelrod, who still composes his own music, learned from Le贸n that a composer must not only tell musicians what notes to play but also how to play them. 鈥淲hat I realized,鈥 he says, 鈥渋s that the art of composition is in large part the art of instructions.鈥

Connecting these kinds of musical revelations to life more generally, Axelrod came to understand that his musical training gave him what he calls 鈥渉uman skills.鈥 He finds himself relying on 鈥渁 lot of those skills that I learned as a composer, as a musician, as an audio engineer鈥 to do his job.

One of Axelrod鈥檚 crucial responsibilities is to catch the attention of students, who have so many other sources of competition for that attention. 鈥淗ow do you break through the noise?鈥 he asks. 鈥淗ow do you let people know what鈥檚 there?鈥

Getting through to students is a particular challenge because fulfilling financial aid requirements is, Axelrod admits, not exactly exciting. 鈥淲hat we are doing is not cool,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not going to get five thousand likes on Instagram.鈥 The information is, however, 鈥渉ighly relevant and highly important.鈥

The new Navigate system has helped make this vital information easier to communicate to students. They can use Navigate to schedule an appointment with a financial aid adviser, says Axelrod, noting that communications from Navigate go to their 可乐视频 e-mail.

Axelrod says he may be a conductor, but the magic happens because of the players鈥攖he staff. “Without them, there is no music, there is no aid,” he says. He urges students to 鈥減artner with us鈥 to find the best ways to fund their education. 鈥淧eople don鈥檛 come to college for financial aid,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hey come to college to get an education. We鈥檙e there to help them accomplish that goal.鈥

Adding to its long list of accolades, 可乐视频 was again named as one of the 鈥溾 in the nation by The Princeton Review庐聽for the fourth straight year.

The rankings include public and private colleges that have earned the education services company’s highest ROI (Return on Investment) rating鈥攁 score the company tallies using more than 40 data points. The ratings are based on analyses that review more than 40 data points. They cover academic offerings, cost/financial aid, career placement services, graduation rates, and student debt as well as alumni salary levels and job satisfaction.

Outside of the overall list, The Princeton Review ranked 可乐视频 a Top 50 Best Value Colleges (Public Schools, No. 39) and a Top 20 Best Schools for Financial Aid (Public Schools, No. 12)

The Princeton Review庐 chose 209 schools for its 2022 list based on its survey of more than 650 institutions during the 2020-21 school year. To tally the ROI ratings, the company analyzed school-reported data on academics, cost/financial aid, career services, student debt, and graduation rates. Data on the levels of job satisfaction and salary of school alumni also factored into the tallies. The list of the 209 Best Value Colleges is not ranked hierarchically from 1 to 209.

More information on the project methodology, the criteria for the ROI rating, and the basis for each ranking list may be found at .

“The schools we chose as our Best Value Colleges for 2022 are a select group: they comprise only about 7% of the nation鈥檚 four-year undergraduate institutions,鈥 said Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review. 鈥淲e commend their administrators, faculties, staff, and alumni for all they are doing to educate their students and guide them to success in their careers. These colleges are also exceptional for the generous amount of financial aid they award to students with need and/or for their comparatively low cost of attendance.鈥

Marcus Richardson 鈥08 鈥10 M.F.A. knew when his college acceptance letters started to file in鈥攆rom SUNY Binghamton, Penn State, Ithaca鈥攖hat those $30,000-range price tags would mean one thing. His mother, a nanny and Trinidadian immigrant, 鈥渨ould have spent every single cent she had to send me to school,鈥 he says.

So, he hid them. The first in his family to attempt to navigate the American higher education system, he didn鈥檛 know to apply for financial aid. After a gap year, a taste of the workforce, and a renewed commitment to his education, he applied to 可乐视频.

This time, because he applied through the Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge program鈥攂etter known as SEEK鈥攈is acceptance letter came with an offer to help fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

It changed the course of his life. While studying in the Television and Radio Department,聽he received a federal Work-Study grant and began what would turn out to be a 10-year stint in the college鈥檚 Office of Financial Aid, where he worked his way up to director before being named the college鈥檚 executive director of strategic initiatives two years ago.

可乐视频: You were offered a job in the Financial Aid Office, but you had been planning for a career as a documentary filmmaker. What made you switch the trajectory of your career?

MR: When I started working here, I realized I loved what I was doing. Because of my own experience trying to finance my education, I loved what financial aid did for students. I loved what it stood for. I knew the system and I was good at talking to students.

That all translated to me being good at my job, so I was offered a full-time position before I finished my master鈥檚 degree. And I never left.

可乐视频: How did your experience in that office impact your outlook and shape what you do now?

MR: I loved those early days. I could have stayed in financial aid, but it鈥檚 an area that has lots of rules and regulations. I saw how things that were completely out of our hands had an impact on a student鈥檚 aid. I saw students with $3,000 bills because their New York State Tuition Assistance Program funding fell through. Maybe they weren鈥檛 taking the right courses that led to graduation and they wasted their time and their money. It was heartbreaking. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch did an interview once at the end of his term where he said, 鈥淚f I knew I wanted to be mayor, I should have run for governor of New York.鈥 So much was decided at the state level. That鈥檚 how I was starting to feel about financial aid. We were the last car in the train. Some of the problems started far back and we weren鈥檛 in a position to rectify them.

I began my Ph.D. in leadership and policy in urban education in 2016 at the CUNY Graduate Center and it allowed me to take a step back and think about where I could have an impact. I realized that I needed to be on the other side. I wanted to work on issues like student success, graduation and retention, curriculum alignment. I wanted to work on big projects that were more strategic.

可乐视频: What kind of projects?

MR: In my new job, I look at things like how you connect something happening in purchasing or facilities to the goal of the college. We want to tie everything in finance and administration into the mission so that every unit is working toward the goal of the college itself.

I want to take this portfolio, at the direction of the senior vice president for finance and administration, build large cross-pillar initiatives, and work with various finance and administration cabinet areas to address concerns such as divisional assessments and tightening processes. I鈥檝e worked on everything from making sure that reentry goes smoothly to helping shape and coordinate the open forums so that we could be transparent within the college community.

I will also work to bring back the administration of the Performing Arts Center at 可乐视频. That鈥檚 a good fit for me because I have a background in musical theater. I remember big shows there when I was growing up. Central Brooklyn has very few venues of this size supporting the arts.

The exciting part is that every time I finish a project, I can move on to something else, so my job keeps changing.

可乐视频: Do you get as much satisfaction since you are not working as directly with students?

MR: Accrediting bodies used to focus more on academics, but now everything at the college needs to support the mission. Colleges and universities haven鈥檛 traditionally looked at student success from a money perspective. That鈥檚 part of what I am doing. I don鈥檛 want to see students in good academic standing drop out because of a snag on the financial side.

It all comes back to our core purpose of access to education. It鈥檚 all related to graduation and retention. So, working on these things gives me a lot of satisfaction. It makes me feel useful. It鈥檚 my 鈥渨hy.鈥

可乐视频 also ranked 20th among public colleges for amount of financial aid awards.

For the third straight year, 可乐视频 has been named to The Princeton Review鈥檚 . The college ranks 35th among public colleges for its value and 20th nationwide for how much financial aid it awards and student satisfaction with that aid.

The Princeton Review鈥檚 list of Best Value Colleges for 2021 is based on a combination of institutional and student survey data, including academic rigor, affordability, and career outcomes for graduates, among others. The data was collected from fall 2019 through fall 2020 via its institutional and student surveys and from PayScale.com on alumni career and salary statistics. Forty data points were weighed, covering academics, costs, financial aid, debt, grad rates, and career/salary data.

The financial aid ranking was based on how much aid a school awards and how satisfied students are with that aid, on a scale of 60鈥99. This rating is based on school-reported data on the percentage of students who were determined to have need and received aid, the percentage of need met for those students, and the percentage of students whose need was fully met. Student survey data that measures students’ satisfaction with the financial aid they receive is also considered.

College President Michelle J. Anderson says the ranking validates the quality and affordability of a 可乐视频 degree. 鈥溈衫质悠 continues to be recognized as a national treasure for its extraordinary educational value,鈥 Anderson said. 鈥淲e are proud to offer excellent degree programs with world-class faculty to our incredibly talented and diverse student body who continue to make a positive impact around the world.鈥

In March, 可乐视频 was also named the most affordable college in the nation, according to Intelligent.com, which included one of CUNY鈥檚 leading senior colleges in top rankings for eight of its degree programs. In December of 2020, named 可乐视频 as one of the nation鈥檚 colleges that offer 鈥渢he biggest bang for the buck.鈥

“The colleges that we designate as our ‘Best Values’ this year are truly a select group: they comprise only about 1.2% of the four-year undergraduate institutions in the U.S.,” said Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review. “These exceptional schools differ in many ways, yet they are alike in that all offer outstanding academics and excellent career services. As important to today’s college applicants and their parents: These colleges have a comparatively low sticker price and/or generous financial aid offerings. We recommend and commend them highly for everything their administrators, faculties, staff, and alumni are doing to educate their students and to guide them to post-college success.”

Teanu Reid technically received her B.A. in history from 可乐视频 in 2016, but her journey to the next phase of her academic career begins with the Class of 2017. Rather than attend graduate school immediately, Reid decided to utilize a gap year to work at the college and to ensure the highest-quality responses聽on her graduate school applications. As a result, Reid was accepted to Ph.D. programs in history at Yale University, Brown University, Columbia University, New York University, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and the University of Virginia. She chose Yale not only because of its academic reputation, but also because of its sizeable community of 可乐视频 alumni, particularly those from the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, which she said helped make the campus feel like a second home.

Teanu Reid

B.A. in history

I have had an amazing experience in my journey from college student to college graduate at 可乐视频.聽The college聽has pushed me to be successful academically and聽encouraged me to be聽socially responsible by providing numerous opportunities for civic engagement聽and community service through its聽clubs and events.聽The college聽has even given me the opportunity to travel through study abroad programs.

I have had some of the most supportive faculty who created a great environment to foster growth academically and professionally. Along the way, I have gained tutoring and teaching experience as a volunteer history tutor at the Learning Center. As a volunteer tutor, I helped students, who were usually not history majors, with their reading assignments, essays, and exams, and tried to share with them what my professors had shared with me.

I also had a chance to develop professionally through my time as a college assistant in the Division of Student Affairs. Combined, I feel like I have a clear understanding of academia and a better sense of what my future holds if I pursue employment in a college or university. No journey is without its road bumps and throughout my time as a student there were several things I had to overcome. Despite the fact that I didn鈥檛 qualify for financial aid because of my parents 鈥渉igh income,鈥 their income on paper wasn鈥檛 reflective of the inconsistent financial support I actually received. I worked diligently to receive scholarships and other forms of merit aid to finance my own education the best I could. Additionally, I had to maintain a balance between scholarship applications and my coursework, my job, volunteering, club involvement, and family responsibilities.

I did all of this while also combatting stereotypical expectations of young black women. From this entire experience I learned that I am a very strong-minded and strong-willed person, and with careful planning and pockets of support, I can achieve goals that I have set for myself. I鈥檝e learned to have patience, to trust myself and believe in my ability to get things done, and to reorient myself as needed when things don鈥檛 go as expected.

可乐视频 is one of the nation’s best values for an undergraduate education, according to the Princeton Review in its just-published book, .

In its profile of 可乐视频, the Massachusetts-based education services company聽praises the school for its 鈥渞igorous academic standards鈥 and quotes from 可乐视频 students surveyed by the Princeton Review who said that 鈥渕y academic gains have been substantial鈥 and that 鈥渆ach professor allows students to have free reign of their thoughts and ideas.鈥

In addition, the School of Education is ranked among the top 20 in the country for graduates, many of whom go on to be the best teachers in New York City.

鈥淲e commend 可乐视频 and all of the extraordinary colleges on our 2012 Best Value Colleges list for all they are doing to keep costs down and offer generous aid to applicants with financial need聽鈥 all while maintaining excellent academic programs,鈥 says Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s senior vice president/publisher and lead author of 2012 edition.

The Best Value Colleges: 2012 Edition, subtitled 鈥淭he 150 Best-Buy Colleges and What It Takes to Get In,鈥 features profiles of 75 public and 75 private colleges, with detailed information about their campus culture, facilities and financial aid offerings.

The聽list and information about the schools are also posted on a dedicated area of USATODAY.com, which has been the Princeton Review’s online publishing partner for this project since 2009. The聽site聽features an exclusive database that allows users to view in-depth details about the schools by clicking on an interactive map.聽Users can explore such criteria as聽cost of attendance and financial aid data, enrollment size, location and the Princeton Review鈥檚 analysis of why it chose each school as a 鈥渂est value.鈥

The Princeton Review selected the schools based on institutional data and student opinion surveys collected from 650 colleges and universities the company regards as the nation’s academically best undergraduate institutions. The selection process analyzed more than 30 data points broadly covering academics, cost and financial aid. Data on academics came from its fall 2010 through fall 2011 surveys of school administrators. Cost and financial aid data came from the company’s fall 2011 surveys of school administrators. Data from students attending the schools over these years included their assessments of their professors and their satisfaction with their financial aid awards.

The post Scholarships and Financial Aid Protect Students From CUNY Tuition Increase appeared first on 可乐视频.

]]>
可乐视频 announced today that it is taking steps to ensure an education of superior quality remains accessible to current and future students as tuition costs rise across the City University of New York. Yesterday, CUNY announced that tuition at all of its campuses will increase by $300 annually for the next four years in order to make up in part for reductions in public funding over the past several years.

At 可乐视频, scholarships, financial aid and other forms of assistance enable more than half of its undergraduate population to attend college without paying any out-of-pocket tuition costs or incurring student loan debt. This is consistent with the college’s long-standing commitment to providing an excellent education at an affordable price.

For the 2010鈥11 academic year, the most recent for which data are available, 可乐视频 awarded students $31 million in federal Pell grants and $14.5 million in awards from the state’s tuition assistance program (TAP) 鈥 a total of more than $45 million. These financial aid packages covered all tuition costs for more than 5,000 students. Another 1,000 students received TAP and Pell awards that funded at least half of their tuition and were eligible for a federal tax credit to cover the balance. In all, the full cost of tuition was covered for nearly 60 percent of undergraduate students enrolled at 可乐视频 during the 2010鈥11 academic year.

Despite increases in tuition, students who qualify for the maximum TAP award will not be held responsible for additional tuition costs. For these students, 可乐视频 will cover any tuition that is not covered by TAP funding. Students who receive a partial TAP award will receive a partial tuition credit.

In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, 可乐视频 continues to raise funds from alumni and friends of the college to support student scholarships. During the 2010鈥11 academic year, the college awarded $1.4 million in scholarships to 1,229 students. The college’s fundraising program has grown substantially in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue. Additional funds raised from private donors will enable the college to expand scholarship opportunities available to students enrolling for the 2012鈥13 academic year.

For students whose tuition is not covered by grants, scholarships and other forms of assistance, 可乐视频 remains a high-value institution from which to earn a degree. Tuition at 可乐视频 is lower than 80 percent of the nation’s public colleges and universities. Furthermore, students from 可乐视频 are less likely to take out student loans than those at other universities in the state; those who do borrow owe 40 percent less upon graduation.

Modest, predictable tuition increases over the next four years will enable students and their families to plan ahead rather than face unexpectedly large spikes in tuition rates when they can least afford it. The state of New York has committed to maintaining its current levels of funding for CUNY over this same four-year period. These steps were necessary in order to maintain the quality of academic programs in light of significant budget reductions over recent years.

From its founding in 1930 until 1976, 可乐视频 received 100 percent of its funding from public sources. Today, the state funds only 21 percent of the college’s operating budget; the remainder is funded by tuition revenue. Since 2010, the college’s base budget has been reduced by $7.9 million, and its state allocation has decreased by one third.
