Program Overview

As an Asian American and Diasporic Studies minor, you will study the history, culture, and experiences of people of Asian descent in the United States and across the globe. This minor explores the connections between Asian communities in the U.S. and across the Asian diaspora.

Declaring a minor allows you to explore other areas of interest and make interdisciplinary connections, and minors complement your major. By declaring a minor, you can set yourself apart as a candidate for job opportunities in international trade and industry, teaching and academic research, the diplomatic Foreign Service, immigration, and social service.

Minor Requirements (15 Credits)

Two required courses and three elective courses, totaling 15 credits.

Required: One background course and one context course, totaling six credits.

Background: Introduction to the American Experience () OR American Identities ()

Context: Asian American History (AMST /HIST ) OR Asian American and Pacific Islander Experience through Literature (AMST /ENGL ). Either course could also be permissible as an elective.

Electives: Three elective courses, including those cross-listed with programs and departments, can satisfy this requirement, totaling 9-10 credits.

  • Asian American History (AMST /HIST ). If not taken to satisfy Context requirement
  • Asian American and Pacific Islander Experience through Literature (AMST /ENGL ), if not taken to satisfy Context requirement
  • Asian American and Pacific Islander Activism and Community (AMST )
